Advanced Wound Care at Bon Secours

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Bon Secours Hampton Roads uses a unique wound bandage, called TheraGauze.  TheraGauze is made up of a white fabric that’s moistened with a polymer mixture. Instead of keeping the wound dry, this bandage keeps it moist. As a result, TheraGauze bandages don’t need to be changed as often, lasting two to three days. With most patients, wounds heal faster with TheraGauze versus other traditional bandages. Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News has been using TheraGauze since it came out in 2007.  To read the complete article, visit The Daily Press:

Am I Having a Stroke?
Statistics show that 50% of patients who are seen within a three hour window experience little to no physical or speech deficit. However, since the window starts closing when the patient was last seen in a normal neurological condition, quick identification of stroke is essential. Just remember to act F.A.S.T

  • Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
  • Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? Can the person repeat what was just asked correctly?
  • Time. Call 911 immediately if the person shows any of these symptoms.

Need a Good Night’s Sleep?

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Did you know that any disruption in your normal sleeping patterns is considered a sleep disorder? Sadly, many sleep disorders go undiagnosed for long periods of time simply because patients think these disruptions are either small and unimportant or may resolve on their own. Both thoughts are wrong and pose potential risks to your overall health.

This month we’re working to help spread the word that you deserve a good night’s sleep and we’d like to make sure you get one. Whether we need to see you, or your partner, we encourage you to speak with your doctor about what’s keeping you up at night.

Start! Heart Walk A Success!

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

70% of Americans get no physical exercise at all – a practice that leads to a number of health issues. The best news is that by adding just an hour of walking a week, you can add two hours to your life. Knowing that a small change can do a lot of good, Bon Secours cheerfully accepted an opportunity to work with the American Heart Association on the first ever National Start Walking day. Participants took a wonderful walk from Town Point park through downtown Norfolk and were treated to healthy refreshments thanks to our friends at Farm Fresh.

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

“Our family care team hopes you’ll stop by to say hello. Take a few minutes to enjoy some refreshments, check out our practice, and have a health screen.”

The practice grew its space, expanding into a suite next door, and grew its staff, welcoming Dr. Maryam Rostami, a second Family Medicine specialist. Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy moved in, sharing its newly expanded space.

Like any good neighbor, Eagle Harbor Medical Associates knows that after you’ve made big improvements, you have to open your doors to friends and community members to see the to see the improvements, enjoy refreshments, and chat.

There’s more – including lots of free health screens and health info. Come and take advantage of the free HeartAware Health Assessments, and let us check your cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood glucose.
