Flu Threat Affects Hospital Visits Policy

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

“Every Virginian wants to maximize safety for hospitalized patients.” So says Virginia’s Health Commissioner, Karen Remley, MD. That’s why she has urged all Virginia hospitals to adopt an “Adults 18+ Only” visiting policy.

All 18 hospitals in Hampton Roads, including the three Bon Secours facilities – DePaul Medical Center, Mary Immaculate Hospital and Maryview Medical Center – are cooperating with the requested policy change. Effective today, Thursday, October 15, families are being asked not to bring young visitors to the hospital.

The visitation measures will be in place until the combined threat of the H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses has passed.

The policy applies only to visitors. Children and young people needing medical care will be cared for as they always have been.

This year’s women’s health presenters for the Peninsula event are Ealena Callender, MD, OB/GYN (Gynecologic Health), and Laura Cordes, MD, OB/GYN (Breast Health). Expect frank talk about topics of interest to women of every age.

Also,  Kim Warde and Kristin Thompson of Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy will present “Fun-ctional exercises and stretching at home and at work.”

Women adore value – there’s lots to love with these free health screenings and services:

Hundreds Drive Thru for Flu Protection

Cars queue up for Drive Thru Flu Shots at Bon Secours Health Center Virginia Beach

Four sites, more than 40 Bon Secours volunteers and eight hundred doses of seasonal flu vaccine were the numbers behind the expanded, second annual Drive Thru  Flu Shots Clinics.

Saturday morning, Oct. 3, the flu shots were given at Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View and at DePaul Medical Center. Afternoon clinics were held at Maryview Medical Center and at the Health Center at Virginia Beach. Cars were lined up and waiting for the clinics to open.

Held in mid-November in 2008, the predicted early onset of 2009’s flu season and the double threat of seasonal and H1N1 (Swine) flu strains influenced Bon Secours to hold the Flu Shot clinics weeks earlier.

Final numbers are not yet in, but the flu shots were well-attended at all locations. Volunteers estimated that more than 750 vaccinations were given. Bon Secours was allotted 25 infant vaccination doses and 75 pediatrics doses. At Saturday’s end, just a few of each remained. The Virginia Beach clinic closed early after it had used all of its vaccines.

Additional flu shots will be available for the same amount ($20) at the two upcoming Bon Secours “Girls Night Out “events:
  • Oct. 17, 2009, 6-9 pm, at the Mary Immaculate Health Resource Center
  • Oct. 27, 2009, 6-9 pm, at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center
