Start! Heart Walk A Success!

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

70% of Americans get no physical exercise at all – a practice that leads to a number of health issues. The best news is that by adding just an hour of walking a week, you can add two hours to your life. Knowing that a small change can do a lot of good, Bon Secours cheerfully accepted an opportunity to work with the American Heart Association on the first ever National Start Walking day. Participants took a wonderful walk from Town Point park through downtown Norfolk and were treated to healthy refreshments thanks to our friends at Farm Fresh.

Good Choice: Two Physicians Honored with Award

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Dr. Lee C. Hinnant, MD of Towne Center Medical Associates and Dr. Alison M. Lex, MD of Bon Secours Medical Associates at Virginia Beach were recently awarded a Patients’ Choice Award. Over 400,000 patients annually evaluate their doctors on bedside manner, time spent with each patient, responsiveness and overall opinion.  Hinnant and Lee scored high on all measures.

We think our doctors are pretty special and we’re thrilled to know that you think so, too!

Celebrate Your Survival at a Relaxing Retreat

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Breast Cancer survivors can look forward to more survivorship retreats thanks to grant funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the tireless efforts of Leslie Smith, Breast Program Coordinator/Certified Breast Patient Navigator and her team.

These multi-day retreats cleverly mix education, such as coping and long-term side effects, with healing approaches such as creative arts, yoga and relaxation.  Discussions range from sensitive topics to humorous stories – all shared in a safe and collaborative environment of kindred spirits.

The retreats, made available by the Komen Foundation and Maryview Medical Center, and are open to all breast cancer survivors who have finished their primary treatment and are no more than 2 years post treatment.  We are pleased to continue this one-of-a-kind program here in Hampton Roads and are honored to aid in the emotional, spiritual and physical recovery of women surviving breast cancer.

If you would like more information on the retreats, please contact Leslie Smith at Leslie_Smith@bshsi.org or (757) 673-5861
