Need a Good Night’s Sleep?

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Did you know that any disruption in your normal sleeping patterns is considered a sleep disorder? Sadly, many sleep disorders go undiagnosed for long periods of time simply because patients think these disruptions are either small and unimportant or may resolve on their own. Both thoughts are wrong and pose potential risks to your overall health.

This month we’re working to help spread the word that you deserve a good night’s sleep and we’d like to make sure you get one. Whether we need to see you, or your partner, we encourage you to speak with your doctor about what’s keeping you up at night.

Different Strokes for Women – May 20, Norfolk

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Different Strokes for Women is designed as a forum for women to interact with health care providers to discover the breaking news on how to screen for, prevent and treat stroke and other related diseases.  It continues in the tradition of Spirit of Women programming developed for the past six years, aimed at empowering women to take charge of their health and act!  Different Strokes for Women is focused on the latest advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of stroke, and especially how the disease may manifest itself differently in women and how there may be disparities in the treatment and outcome of the disease in women.

Different Strokes for Women will also include important free health screenings for women, as well as complementary lectures, activities and/or exhibits that entertain, inspire and foster friendship and communication among women.

Decision Points: Facts, Feelings & Your Health

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Decision Points help you navigate personal health decisions

Everyone deals with tough decisions in their own way. Decision Points are interactive tools that help you to weigh your health care options. They were recently introduced in the Bon Secours Orthopaedic Institute pages.

Created by health educators and reviewed by board-certified physicians, Decision Points tools are provided to Bon Secours by Healthwise, a national healthcare information publisher. You’ll find them in the health information pages of bonsecourshamptonroads.com. These tools address a wide range of health issues;  medical tests, medicines and surgeries.

Each assessment tool presents the benefit, the risks, and the costs of your opting yes or no. It also factors in how you feel about the health issue.

Each Decision Point tool leads you through a quick, six-step learning session. The six steps of the process take as long to complete as it might to read a brief magazine article.

  1. Get the Facts
  2. Compare Options
  3. (rate) Your Feelings
  4. Your Decision
  5. Quiz Yourself (are you sure?)
  6. Your Summary  (”use this to talk with your doctor or loved ones about your decision.” )
